Broncos practice squad QB Sam Ehlinger turned down offer to return to Colts

Sam Ehlinger had an engaging start to the week The Broncos practice squad quarterback spent about hours after Denver s win in Las Vegas weighing an opportunity to return to Indianapolis for the stretch run of the season he stated The Denver Post on Wednesday Ehlinger revealed his agent had extensive talks with the Colts after their starting quarterback Daniel Jones tore his Achilles on Sunday Indianapolis ultimately brought in -year-old Philip Rivers for a Monday workout and signed him to the practice squad five years after he last saw live NFL action Rivers could start as soon as Sunday for the Colts in Seattle Ehlinger reported he s happy in Denver with the - Broncos trying to make a deep run in the postseason I think a lot Ehlinger noted when petitioned what went into the decision to stay in Denver We re really happy here and enjoy the organization the path we re on and what we re building I want to be part of that I was in Indianapolis for four years and I love everybody over there It s just a challenging situation obviously Ehlinger was a sixth-round pick out of Texas by the Colts in and spent the first four seasons of his career there He started three games all in and appeared in eight total between - Ehlinger indicated the Colts were trying to bring him in likely along with Rivers It s not the first time Ehlinger s had opportunities to go elsewhere either Head coach Sean Payton reported the quarterback turned down -man roster spots at the cutdown in August to stay with the Broncos Ehlinger started the year on the practice squad was signed to the evolving roster before Denver s season opener then later published and re-signed to the practice squad In terms of money Ehlinger was on the functioning roster for Week and thus was eligible for termination pay when he was published That means he s set to make the league minimum for the advancing roster million for a fifth-year player regardless of how much he s up and down from the practice squad to the current roster The Broncos clearly longed Ehlinger to stay and have been bullish about him since the summer Related Articles Broncos LG Ben Powers returns to practice crew opens window to return off IR Nuggets Avs and Broncos are off to hot starts Is this the best they ve ever been at the same time Broncos Marvin Mims Jr named AFC special teams member of the week Should Broncos fans cheer for Chiefs to improbably make the playoffs or fully flame out Keeler Broncos remind ex-Denver RB C J Anderson of Super Bowl champs right down to disrespect I was dependably like man if somebody just spent a little more time mechanically with him or had a former quarterback coaching him I think the best is yet to come for him quarterbacks coach Davis Webb recounted The Post in August When he was available and we needed a No or a guy that could push our No that was a pretty easy decision We didn t go after multiple but we went after him Now Ehlinger will continue on with the Broncos down the stretch and watch Rivers attempt his comeback from afar for the - Colts who have lost four of their past five games It s wild and more power to him Ehlinger mentioned of Rivers comeback I m excited to watch Want more Broncos news Sign up for the Broncos Insider to get all our NFL analysis
